What is waterproof flooring?

Waterproof flooring is a trend as more and more homeowners are looking for stylish and durable flooring that provides a stress-free, high level of moisture protection. If you want the look of wood in your bathroom, known as the "wettest room in the house," if your kids are prone to spilling, if your pets topple water bowls or are accident-prone, this flooring is for you. Even if you aren't inclined to dropping gallons of milk, you still need it because homes have plenty of steam and humidity.

Waterproof vs. water-resistant flooring

You need to understand the difference, so you'll know what you're getting. When something is waterproof, it is impervious to liquid and made of waterproof materials. There are no special coatings or other features, and it is waterproof from bottom to top, meaning that it can be submerged or spilled on. Water-resistant products repel liquid, but only for a short time; unless it is wiped right away, it will break through the barrier and soak the core.

High style, low cost

This is a waterproof vinyl flooring, a newer, even thicker, and more durable version of luxury vinyl. These floors also use the WPC (wood plastic composite) or SPC (stone plastic composite) cores which never peel or ripple no matter how much water there is or for how long. While the two cores offer the same high level of moisture protection, WPC floors are warmer and more resilient, while SPC floors are more rigid and firm.

These floors have the same style as luxury vinyl, with images created from 3D photography with micro beveling and embossing. It is often associated with hardwood looks; in fact, waterproof vinyl plank is much sought-after, but it's also available in groutable squares to echo stone and ceramic tile. Like authentic luxury, it follows all the trends, including gray or whitewashed floors; marble or granite surfaces; or colorful geometric, chevron, herringbone, lattice, and encaustic-style patterns.

These floors are easy to care for with just a daily sweeping and periodic mopping. Installation can also be easy, especially when installed with the floating floor technique, where the pieces click together and hover over a subfloor without nails or glue. Subfloors need to be clean, dry, and level.
